Unlocking the Benefits of Paddling: How It Boosts Physical and Mental Health

Paddle sports such as stand up paddle boarding (SUP), canoeing and kayaking offer so much more than just an adventure on the water. Taking part can improve our mental and physical health too.

Physical benefits

Paddling is great exercise! SUP, canoeing and kayaking are low impact sports that can improve our aerobic fitness, strength and flexibility. Paddling is a great overall workout and whether you’re gliding across a serene lake or navigating through choppy open water, the rhythmic motion of paddling provides an excellent cardiovascular workout, promoting heart health and circulation. Paddling is generally suitable for people of all ages and abilities because of the low impact nature nature of the sports, this means they’re gentle on the joints, there. is low risk of injury and we can enjoy being on the water for a long time.

Paddling is also a great full body workout, engaging multiple muscle groups from your arms and shoulders to your core and legs. Every stroke helps to strengthen muscles, and compared to traditional gym workouts, paddling offers an alternative that combines staying fit with being out in nature. The rotational movements you do with every paddle stroke and staying balanced on your craft can help to build up core strength which makes everyday life easier.

Cognitive benefits

Beyond the physical benefits, paddling offers a whole range of mental health benefits as well. We know that spending time on or near water can reduce stress and help us to relax (check out the book Blue Mind). Paddling is also a rhythmic exercise, which some people find almost meditative and soothing. It’s easy to get into that flow state! When we exercise, our bodies release endorphins, natural feel-good hormones that can last hours and help us be more positive and relaxed for the rest of the day. There’s a sense of accomplishment and freedom that comes with getting out on the water for a paddle.

Navigating tricky conditions and challenging environments gives us a cognitive boost by stimulating the brain, helping us focus on something new requiring concentration, quick decision making and skill development. It’s easy to get bored whilst running on a treadmill, but paddling in currents or plotting a course through waterways can boost our creativity and keep the mind sharp.

Whether you’re joining a SUP Club or heading out with a group of friends, exploring new waters or getting through challenging conditions together, paddling is a great opportunity for social connection. You can meet new people and strengthen bonds with old friends. Heading for a coffee with your buddies after a paddling session can be a great way to catch up.

Paddling isn’t just an activity for boosting fitness. There are huge mental and physical benefits from being on the water, and the best part is you’re in nature too! So why not take some time out this week and head down to your local paddle club to go for a paddle with some friends?! If you do, be sure to share your trips with us - we’d love to see them!
